Thunder Enlightening by Brian Willingham Thunder Enlightening, a socially impactful book, profiles African Americans as seen by one young man during a time of challenge and revelation. Brian Willingham would appear to be an ordinary black man in the Flint, Michigan, of GM and Michael Moore notoriety. That is until one gets a glimpse at how, why and where he creates his photographic and word images. Street people, family, and everyday life take on an aura of profound significance as seen through his photographic lens. Some are accompanied by poetry wrung from a painful personal journey; all ask, beg or promise a better tomorrow in a more tolerant land, a land Brian loves, respects and reveres despite his experiences and perceptions. Aside from being a photographer and poet, Brian is a police officer, son, husband, and father and community leader. His work is touted by representatives of the University of Michigan-Flint and is used in various curricula.
Brian Willingham’s book, “Thunder Enlightening”, published by
WordMaster, is a wonderful profile of African-Americans as seen through the eyes of a police officer. This mixture of photographs and poetry composed during a temporary layoff from his job as a City of Flint police officer brings images of life on the streets together with poetry that springs from his own difficult life’s journey. |
